Darby Wheeler Obituary, Death – The First Christian Church in Hennessey will celebrate Darby Wheeler’s life on December 20 at 11 a.m. Darby D. Wheeler, 83, died in Oklahoma City on December 14, 2023. Lloyd and Louise Melendy had Darby Wheeler on a farm in Lovell, Oklahoma, on November 4, 1940. His elementary and high schools were Surprise and Hennessey. He was Hennessey High junior class president and FFA president. He loved football. Darby married Pansy Marshall June 28, 1959.
They lived on Darby’s boyhood homestead with their three sons, Charles Howard, Arthur Duane, and Lloyd Louis. The family left Cordell, OK for Lamont and Tonkawa after two years. Darby farmed wheat and pigs his whole life. After retiring as a successful oil tank welder, he co-owned Wheeler Furniture Restoration with Pansy for 18 years. In retirement, Darby and Pansy returned to Hennessey. Darby loved hunting and fishing with his aunts and relatives. He was Junior Farm Bureau state president in Oklahoma for a year.
He enjoyed playing cards at the Lacey Card Club. As a deacon, elder, and member of Oak Grove Christian, First Christian Church Lamont, First Christian Church Tonkawa, and First Christian Church Hennessey, Darby was a devout Christian. He was also interested in his church’s men’s group. Darby’s siblings Arthur Wheeler, Lloyd Lewis Wheeler, Barbara Yeoman of Dover, and Beatrice Marshall of Hennessey died before him.
His 64-year-old wife Pansy and sons Charles (and Regina) of Guthrie and Lloyd (and Lisa) of Tulsa survive him. Three grandchildren, Austin (and Hayley) Wheeler of Tulsa, Allie Wheeler of Pryor, and Sean Turk of Guthrie, and four great-grandchildren, Earl Marshall, Hennessy’s brother-in-law, Tom Cain, and Coralen of Madison, Mississippi, survive him. Many nieces and nephews, Joan Tribble of The Colony, TX, Margaret Meek of Coppell, TX, and many friends. In lieu of flowers, the Hennessey School Foundation or a memorial fund may welcome donations.
