William Refrigerator Perry Net Worth $10,000
From a young age, William struggled with his size, being 200 pounds when he was only 11 years old; due to his size, he was often criticized and ridiculed, and received the nickname refrigerator later when he was in college, which followed him throughout his career in the NFL. He went to Aiken High School, where he not only played football, but also ran track, played basketball, and competed in the shot putt.
After high school he received a scholarship to attend Clemson University, where he focused primarily on football, playing for the Clemson Tigers under head coach Danny Ford. He had a successful college career, earning first-team All-American honors in his junior year, while in his first year he won the national championship with the university.
After his successful years in college, William declared for the 1985 NFL Draft, and was selected as the 22nd pick overall by the Chicago Bears. In his first season, William appeared in all 16 games, nine of which were starts, including winning the Super Bowl with the team, however, he was forced out of his natural position due to a dispute between defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan and coach Mike Ditka. However, he stayed in the Bears until 1993.
After his stint with the Bears ended, William joined the Philadelphia Eagles, but didn’t have much success in the two years he had spent there, and as a result, he joined the NFL Europe Team, the London Monarchs, for which he played one season, before deciding to retire.
Mostly due to his size, William also started a fighting career; he appeared at WrestleMania 2 as a part of the battle royal event back in 1986. Then in 2000 he participated in the toughman boxing competition, but lost to Bob Sapp. He also featured in the Celebrity Boxing event two times, losing to basketballer Manute Bol on both occasions.
William made several TV appearances, firstly in 1986 appearing as himself in an episode of the TV series “The A-Team”. He subsequently appeared in “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” (2005-2010), then as himself again in the TV film “Windy City Heat” (2003), and also in the short film “Rein: The Rejuvenator” in 2009, all of which increased his net worth.
Regarding his personal life, William has been married to Valerie since 2007. Previously, he was married to Sherry Broadwater from 1982 to 2004; the couple had four children, before divorcing.
Starting in 2008, William has had severe health problems; in June that year, he was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome, a chronic inflammation disorder of the peripheral nerves, spending a month in hospital the following year as his health deteriorated. He also gained even more weight, in January 2016 weighing 425 pounds, subsequently receiving treatment for diabetes. He is now in wheelchair and lives in his father’s house. Also, he is taken care of by his younger brother, and one of his former teammates. William lives off a social security disability check, and disability money that he receives from the NFL, as a part of the NFL program that helps former players in need of assisted care. Most recently, he was admitted to hospital with a leg infection so severe that amputation was a possibility .
Due to his deteriorating health and the cost of treatments, William had put his Super Bowl ring on auction, and it was bought out by a 10-year child and his mother for $8,500, with the 10-year old returning the ring to William. However, he has auctioned it again as he was in dire need of money.
