From a young age, William struggled with his size, being 200 pounds when he was only 11 years old; due to his size, he was often criticized and ridiculed, and received the nickname refrigerator later when he was in college, which followed him throughout his career in the NFL. He went to Aiken High School, where he not only played football, but also ran track, played basketball, and competed in the shot putt.

After high school he received a scholarship to attend Clemson University, where he focused primarily on football, playing for the Clemson Tigers under head coach Danny Ford. He had a successful college career, earning first-team All-American honors in his junior year, while in his first year he won the national championship with the university.

After his successful years in college, William declared for the 1985 NFL Draft, and was selected as the 22nd pick overall by the Chicago Bears. In his first season, William appeared in all 16 games, nine of which were starts, including winning the Super Bowl with the team, however, he was forced out of his natural position due to a dispute between defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan and coach Mike Ditka. However, he stayed in the Bears until 1993.

After his stint with the Bears ended, William joined the Philadelphia Eagles, but didn’t have much success in the two years he had spent there, and as a result, he joined the NFL Europe Team, the London Monarchs, for which he played one season, before deciding to retire.
